What a Grade 12 Business Studies diagnostic is

Exam Diagnostics ZA is a South African service that marks a full Grade 10–12 mock exam paper mark by mark and reports every lost mark, with a strategy report and a video walkthrough, within 24 hours. A Grade 12 Business Studies diagnostic is that service applied to one paper: your child writes it at home on the clock, sends photographs of the pages, and you get a mark with the reason behind every lost mark beside it.

The work looks learned and the mark does not show it. Business Studies allocates marks to specific, named points, and a general answer collects very few of them.

Why Grade 12 is the year to do it

In matric the gap between what your child knows and what the paper records is the whole game. Prelims are the last full rehearsal before the National Senior Certificate examinations, and the last point at which a strategy problem can still be fixed in time.

  • Before the mid-year papers, while there is still time to change how a paper is written.
  • Between the mid-year papers and the prelims, working from what the mid-year mark showed.
  • Immediately after the prelims, when the exact questions that lost marks are still fresh and the finals are still ahead.

What the Grade 12 Business Studies papers cover

Paper 1 covers business environments and business operations. Paper 2 covers business ventures and business roles. You pick one when you order. Grade 12 papers run to 150 marks in 2 hours per paper; Grades 10 and 11 follow the same shape over less content.

PaperFocusMain topics
Paper 1 Business environments and business operations. Business environments and the challenges they create; Contemporary socio-economic issues; Legislation: the BCEA, LRA, EEA, BBBEE and NCA; Human resources and the recruitment cycle; Quality of performance and total quality management
Paper 2 Business ventures and business roles. Forms of ownership; Investment: securities and insurance; Presentation and data response; Creative thinking and problem solving; Team performance and conflict management; Ethics, professionalism and corporate social responsibility

CAPS or IEB. The IEB builds its papers around longer case studies, so the theory has to be pulled out of a scenario rather than recalled on request.

Where the marks go in Grade 12 Business Studies

Every lost mark is sorted into one of five reasons. Two of them — accuracy and not written down — mean the method was right and the mark was already in reach. Those are the marks a report can hand back before the next paper.

  • Not written down. Three marks are asked for and two points are given, or a point is named without the explanation that carries the second mark.
  • Misread. The scenario in the case study is not used, so a technically correct answer earns nothing.
  • Didn’t remember. A named Act, or the specific term the marking guideline expects, is replaced by a description of it.

ReasonWhat it meansRecoverable?
Wrong method The route chosen could not reach the answer. No — this is a gap to teach
Accuracy The method was right; the arithmetic slipped. Yes — the method was right
Not written down The working stopped before the mark was earned. Yes — the method was right
Misread A value or instruction was taken off the paper wrongly. No — this is a gap to teach
Didn’t remember A formula or definition was not recalled in the moment. No — this is a gap to teach

Questions parents ask

When should a Grade 12 pupil write a Business Studies diagnostic?

Before the mid-year papers, while there is still time to change how a paper is written. There is no fixed date — the paper is available within 24 hours of payment and your child writes when it suits you.

Is this a real Grade 12 paper?

It is a full paper set for Grade 12 Business Studies in your chosen curriculum, written under exam conditions: 3 timed hours, closed book, no help. If your child uses notes the report will be wrong, because it measures what happens in an exam.

What if the problem is that my child does not know the work?

The report says so. Marks lost to wrong method, misreads and forgotten definitions are gaps to teach, not marks to recover. Where the gaps are knowledge rather than exam technique, we recommend tutors who work from the report.

Can I order for more than one child?

Yes. One order can carry several children, each with their own grade and papers, and the volume discount applies across the whole order.
