Choosing a subject

Exam Diagnostics ZA is a South African service that marks a full Grade 10–12 mock exam paper mark by mark and reports every lost mark, with a strategy report and a video walkthrough, within 24 hours. Start with the subject where the mark and the effort do not match. That gap is usually exam technique rather than knowledge, and it is exactly what a diagnostic measures.

Every subject, and what its two papers examine.
SubjectPaper 1Paper 2
Mathematics Algebra, functions, finance and calculus. Geometry, trigonometry and statistics.
Mathematical Literacy The basics and routine procedures across every topic. The same topics in longer, multi-step, real-world contexts.
Physical Sciences Physics. Chemistry.
Life Sciences Life processes: reproduction, responding to the environment and homeostasis. Genetics, evolution and the environment.
Accounting Financial reporting and evaluation. Managerial accounting, and managing resources.
Economics Macroeconomics and economic pursuits. Microeconomics and contemporary economic issues.
Business Studies Business environments and business operations. Business ventures and business roles.

Paper 1 or Paper 2

Every one of these subjects is written as two papers covering different content. A pupil can be steady in one and adrift in the other, so diagnosing the wrong paper tells you very little. The subject pages set out exactly what each covers.

  • Mathematics. The subject where method marks are won and lost line by line. Paper 1: Algebra, functions, finance and calculus. Paper 2: Geometry, trigonometry and statistics.
  • Mathematical Literacy. Real-world maths, where the marks hide in the reading rather than the sums. Paper 1: The basics and routine procedures across every topic. Paper 2: The same topics in longer, multi-step, real-world contexts.
  • Physical Sciences. Two papers, two subjects: Physics in Paper 1, Chemistry in Paper 2. Paper 1: Physics. Paper 2: Chemistry.
  • Life Sciences. Listed as Biology on the order form; the subject CAPS and the IEB call Life Sciences. Paper 1: Life processes: reproduction, responding to the environment and homeostasis. Paper 2: Genetics, evolution and the environment.
  • Accounting. Long questions where one early error can quietly cost a whole section. Paper 1: Financial reporting and evaluation. Paper 2: Managerial accounting, and managing resources.
  • Economics. Essays and data questions where structure earns as many marks as content. Paper 1: Macroeconomics and economic pursuits. Paper 2: Microeconomics and contemporary economic issues.
  • Business Studies. Marks are given for named points, in the number the question asks for. Paper 1: Business environments and business operations. Paper 2: Business ventures and business roles.

By grade

The paper is set for the grade your child is in, so a Grade 10 diagnostic is a Grade 10 paper written under Grade 10 conditions. Each grade page sets out that year’s exams and when in the year a diagnostic is worth writing.

CAPS and IEB

Both are available for every subject, and you choose once per order because a family is normally at one school. The content is the same curriculum; what differs is how the questions are framed and how much of the work is set in an unfamiliar context.

If you are unsure which your child is on, it is on their school report. What the difference means in practice is set out in CAPS or IEB: what it means for exams .

Questions about subjects

Which grades, subjects and curricula?

Grades 10–12, IEB and CAPS. Mathematics, Mathematical Literacy, Physical Sciences, Life Sciences (listed as Biology), Accounting, Economics and Business Studies — Paper 1 or Paper 2.

Why is Life Sciences called Biology on the order form?

The order catalogue uses the older name. It is the same subject, the same paper and the same report; only the label on the form differs.

Can we write both papers of a subject?

Yes. They are two separate papers with two separate reports, and both count towards the volume discount in one order.

Are languages available?

Not at the moment. The seven subjects above are the ones available, in Paper 1 or Paper 2.
