What Grade 11 is for

Many South African universities open applications during Grade 11 and make provisional offers on Grade 11 final marks. That makes this the year with the shortest gap between a mark and a consequence, and the year where a technique problem is most expensive to leave undiagnosed.

Exam Diagnostics ZA is a South African service that marks a full Grade 10–12 mock exam paper mark by mark and reports every lost mark, with a strategy report and a video walkthrough, within 24 hours. Everything below is the same service, set for Grade 11.

The Grade 11 exam year

A Grade 11 year has three points where the paper counts, and a diagnostic is worth most just before one of them — early enough for what it finds to change how the next paper is written.

  • June examinations
  • A third-term test or examination
  • November final examinations, the marks most universities use for provisional offers

When to write one

  • Term 1 or early Term 2, while there is still a full year to change how your child writes.
  • August or September, before the finals that carry the provisional offers.
  • December, to start Grade 12 knowing exactly which marks are within reach.

Grade 11 subjects

Seven subjects are available for Grade 11, each in Paper 1 or Paper 2, in CAPS or IEB. Pick the subject the marks are going missing in — one order can carry several papers, and several children.

SubjectWhat its papers examine
Grade 11 Mathematics The subject where method marks are won and lost line by line.
Grade 11 Mathematical Literacy Real-world maths, where the marks hide in the reading rather than the sums.
Grade 11 Physical Sciences Two papers, two subjects: Physics in Paper 1, Chemistry in Paper 2.
Grade 11 Life Sciences Listed as Biology on the order form; the subject CAPS and the IEB call Life Sciences.
Grade 11 Accounting Long questions where one early error can quietly cost a whole section.
Grade 11 Economics Essays and data questions where structure earns as many marks as content.
Grade 11 Business Studies Marks are given for named points, in the number the question asks for.
