What Grade 10 is for

Grade 10 is the first year your child writes full subject papers under exam conditions. The mark matters less than what it reveals. A habit formed now — showing working, watching the clock, reading the question twice — is worth three years of marks.

Exam Diagnostics ZA is a South African service that marks a full Grade 10–12 mock exam paper mark by mark and reports every lost mark, with a strategy report and a video walkthrough, within 24 hours. Everything below is the same service, set for Grade 10.

The Grade 10 exam year

A Grade 10 year has three points where the paper counts, and a diagnostic is worth most just before one of them — early enough for what it finds to change how the next paper is written.

  • June examinations, the first full papers of the FET phase
  • A third-term test or examination in most schools
  • November final examinations, promoting your child to Grade 11

When to write one

  • Early in Term 2, before the June papers, so the June mark is not the first honest measurement of the year.
  • After June, when a disappointing result needs a reason rather than a resolution to work harder.
  • In the September holidays, to check that whatever changed after June actually changed.

Grade 10 subjects

Seven subjects are available for Grade 10, each in Paper 1 or Paper 2, in CAPS or IEB. Pick the subject the marks are going missing in — one order can carry several papers, and several children.

SubjectWhat its papers examine
Grade 10 Mathematics The subject where method marks are won and lost line by line.
Grade 10 Mathematical Literacy Real-world maths, where the marks hide in the reading rather than the sums.
Grade 10 Physical Sciences Two papers, two subjects: Physics in Paper 1, Chemistry in Paper 2.
Grade 10 Life Sciences Listed as Biology on the order form; the subject CAPS and the IEB call Life Sciences.
Grade 10 Accounting Long questions where one early error can quietly cost a whole section.
Grade 10 Economics Essays and data questions where structure earns as many marks as content.
Grade 10 Business Studies Marks are given for named points, in the number the question asks for.
