The 2026 NSC final exams start on Tuesday 13 October, and Mathematics Paper 1 is on Friday 23 October. Three weeks is too short to learn a new topic well and long enough to stop losing marks your child already knows how to earn. This is how to spend them.

The dates that matter
The finals open on Tuesday 13 October. The gateway papers follow within three weeks: Mathematics, then Physical Sciences. Universities read these subjects first, often against thresholds of 50%, 60% or 70% depending on the faculty. Check the full timetable on the DBE's own site before you plan around any date here.

What can still move in three weeks
Habits move; syllabuses do not. A topic your child never understood will not be secure in three weeks. An arithmetic slip, working that stops before the mark, a question left for last and never reached: those change in days, because the knowledge is already there. They are the recoverable marks.
In that paper the recoverable marks came from two habits, not twenty topics. That is the pattern worth looking for now: not what your child does not know, but what they know and still do not score.
A plan for the three weeks
Week one, find out where the marks go: one full paper under exam conditions, 3 hours, closed book. Week two, fix the two habits that cost the most, one at a time. Week three, write a second paper to see whether they changed, and leave the final days for rest.
Week one: measure One full, timed paper in the subject that worries you most. Not a topic test and not a past paper marked at the kitchen table: the whole paper, with every lost mark given a reason.
Week two: fix two habits Not ten. The report ranks what cost the most. Work on the top two until they are automatic — writing the formula before substituting, checking units, moving on from a stuck question.
Week three: prove it A second paper built from what the first one found. If the recoverable marks came back, your child walks into the exam knowing it. If not, you still have days to adjust.
The last days: rest Past papers the night before change very little. Sleep changes a great deal.
Where a diagnostic fits
Exam Diagnostics ZA is a South African service that marks a full Grade 10–12 mock exam paper mark by mark and reports every lost mark, with a strategy report and a video walkthrough, within 24 hours. Mark Recovery is built for exactly these three weeks: Paper 1 and Paper 2 diagnosed, then a follow-up paper built from both reports, for R749.
Order this week if you want the follow-up paper written before the exam. The report comes back within 24 hours of the upload, so the constraint is not our marking; it is how many evenings your child has left.
